Make Your Web Site More Professional: Get Rid of "Halos"
Around GIF Images
Most GIF images look great on a white or pale background,
but not on a dark background. Even if you've made the GIF's
background transparent, you'll be left with a white halo around
the image. This makes it look ugly when pasted onto a dark
background.

the black background! |
To correct the halo problem in Image 1, you need to use the
File > Save for Web > Matte feature in Photoshop. Choose
the color of your Web page background and then save your GIF.
(Tip: If your Web page background is a tiled image, choose
a predominant color in the tile for the matte.)
Your image will no longer have a white halo around it, but
it might still have a few light-colored pixels here and there
(Image 2). Use the brush or pencil tool and fill those pixels
with your Web page background color.
Voila! Your GIF image will now appear to be floating on
your Web page...very professional (Image 3).
In Paint Shop Pro the matte feature is found in Export >
GIF Optimizer > Partial Transparency.
